Project Overview

This Allison Architects Helensburgh project was designed to capitalise on tthe views across the Firth of Clyde and to make the best possible use of the Southerly Aspect.

The Existing House was built in the 1950s so as a mid-century building this falls within our Heritage Homes Specialist Category.

We firstly carried out our in depth analysis of the clients needs and aspirations for their home to fully gauge the clients’ brief and to understand the likley costs of the construction.

The Brief

The clients researched heritage homes specialist architects who serve the Helensburgh area and they decided to work with us at Allison Architects.

The existing house is a two storey, four double bedroom property with an attic room which currently serves as a dressing room and storage space accessed by a spiral staircase.

Currently, the only access to the large rear garden, which faces the sea, is a set of French Doors.

The ground floor is also fairly limited in its accommodation as it is only one room in depth while giving the impression of being much larger.

The clients wanted to increase the size of the accommodation for the, kitchen, dining room and living room to increase the home’s capacity to be a focal point for family get togethers, making the space large enough to host Christmas dinners and summer gatherings where all the children and grandchildren can be there at the same time.

The Design

We worked with the client to develop designs and seamlessly coordinate a single storey extension to the rear of the property which created athe enhanced living space and separate utility.

The focus of the design was to ensure that the Southern wall incorporated the maximimum amount of glazing possible to make the very most of the views.

With full width bi-fold doors the whole wall can be opened up to provide a seamless access to the raised deck outside with comfortbale loungers and outside sofas.

We opened up the existing kitchen by removing the wall which resulted in a large kitchen, diner and living area to complement the existing house.

The kitchen incorporates a generous island with pendant lighting above and sitting space at the worktop height with views through to the dining room and sitting area.

Extenally we used a smooth white render to tie in width the existing and to give a fresh and crisp contemporary look and feel.

We then incorporated aluminium panelling in beige grey to contrast delicately with the white render and to match in with the rest of the glazing.

The Roof Terrace is surfaced in grey millboard with toughened glass frameless balustrading.
