The Brief

Allison Architects Cambuslang clients wanted us to create designs for a generously sized kitchen dining space with a new utility /mudroom.

We worked closely with the client to create a design to optimise the kitchen and dining room to create a warm and welcoming space. The original kitchen had previously been converted into a dining area but this lacked natural light.

The Design Process

We worked closely with the client to create a design to optimise the kitchen and dining room to create a warm and welcoming space. The original kitchen had previously been converted into a dining area but this lacked natural light.

The new kitchen was situated in a part of the building where the old was house was located and it had no insulation in the floor, roof or walls, making it a cold and uninviting space.

Our architects worked with our clients in Cambuslang to develop a design to retain the existing kitchen but create an adjacent extension which would include a new dining area.

The Result

The old kitchen wall was removed to create a large, open plan space and installed a double vaulted ceiling with the inclusion of sky lights to allow an effective flow of light into the space below.

The kitchen ceiling was insulated in accordance with building regulations and under floor heating was installed to create additional warmth in the winter months.

The final aspects to the design included the creation of a cloakroom and vestibule with a polished concrete wall designed as a thermal mass to retain heat from the wood burning stove.
